At the end of 14 YEARS OF LIVING ART I created ANOTHER 21 YEARS OF LIVING ART. It was a free online self directed school based on 3 groups of participants researching and performing the 7 CHAKRAS for 7 years. It was amazing, satisfying, and a few weeks ago I decided to create another self led online university titled:
THE LINDA MARY MONTANO ART LIFE INSTITUTE PHD
(PRACTICING HEARTFELT DISCOVERIES) EXPERIENCE.
PHD is a 3 year self led Facebook based free journey into sharing “ research” as a way to alchemical transformation and connection.
WHAT TO DO.
Participants will begin their research in November and will follow my suggestions OR their own prompts/topics which might better address their personal narrative.
MY SUGGESTION.
YEAR 1: Research fairytales from every nation for 9 months. For 3 months write a 3, 7, or 21 page SHARED ONLINE PDF to address fairytales and how they mirror your own story.
SUGGESTIONS
YEAR 2: Read the GREAT BOOKS by women and men. Write a 3,7, or 21 page PDF which is half written by you and half by AI .The paper/online PDF addresses YOUR GREATNESS.
SUGGESTIONS
YEAR 3. Research ART/LIFE IN THE NEXT 21 YEARS. Research and write 2 papers. One PDF is by you, your mind, and one paper is by AI. Both can be 3,7, or 21 pages long.
AT THE END:
A LIVE/ONLINE GRADUATION CEREMONY will take place at GRACE EXHIBITION SPACE in three years

ORIGIN: After seeing the Havey Fite show at the Lamb Center and emerge last year, remembering that I studied stone carving with Harvey Fites teacher, was it Pennington?, I felt encouraged when Shout Out: Suzanne Bennett and Emerge: Robert Langdon asked me last year to consider a show......honored to be considered to be a Saugerties hidden and retired artist, coming out of hiding.
INFLUENCES; Both parents musical &artistic; maternal grandmother my first teacher an outsider artist; paternal grandparents spoke no english and influenced my work with personas; immigrants in Saugerties created a social isolation and hiddenness which made art an easy language to speak; Montano's shoe store influence discipline and is a healing center, helping people; Catholic Church incense, ritual, soul study, discipline, wanting to be a priest and artist next best way. Convent as a training in performative uniformity and endurance, not speaking for 2 years while there: vow of silence.
EDUCATION: parents never critiqued, allowed always to create and given money and time to do so. Nun at College opened the door to sculpture lab and i SELF HEALED from an eating disorder. My art as therapy always there right from the beginning. For MA sent sculptures home from Italy and they now are going to Museums in memory of MITCHELL PAYNE. My show for MFA live chickens in gallery and beginning of endurance performances as CHICKEN WOMAN, a chance to endure stillness publically, as art.
NEW TAKE ON CATHOLICISM: MATTHEW FOX : VIA POSITIVA, VIA PURGATIVA, VIA , VIA TRANSFORMATIVA, a once Catholic priest who resaw the Catholic Mass. My art is often a response to the Catholic rituals and i admire Matthew Fox's bravery in his reseeing the Catholic rituals even though he was later excommunicated.
ART WORLD: I am an artist but view myself as an outsider who is not interested in the language or discussion that this entails.
LANGUAGE OF ART: I was a selective mute as a child and internalized thoughts words feelings ideas and traumas. Art became and is still my most fluent language. I speak as art not as a life language person.
THE OCT 14-NOV19 COLLABORATIVE SHOW IN SAUGERTIES.
EMERGE: I will collaborate with 14 artists at EMERGE on the theme of the 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS. I will make a Crucifix for the show and the wall will be an interactive "healing/prayer/miracle" interaction. One of my stone carved heads will be lying in the front window and will reference the 7 CHAKRAS, a 14 year experience I performed 1984-1998.

Please indicate the number of the Station you are referencing on the back. Frames can be picked up at Emerge. The participation fee for the show is $20. STATEMENT.Having grown up Roman Catholic in Saugerties, 81 years ago, attending St Mary's grammar school for 8 years, joining , a convent for 2 years to attempt to become a Maryknoll Sister, attending a Catholic college for 4 years and receiving my MA from a Catholic University in Italy, it is not surprising that many times my art reflects my spiritual training and hunger!!! That is, I am steeped in Roman Catholic theologies which sustain my need for Cosmic Order! And now, post Covid, pre Armagedón, current climate failures and unspeakable world issues invite me to fall back into a need for "Order" on a daily basis!!!The 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS were and are still a structure and way for me to travel through my questions about death, grief, connection and compassion. Post Pandemic, these themes still visit me and I've proposed to Suzanne, Robert and Christa that the Emerge Gallery become a "healing chapel" via YOUR PERSONAL reinterpretations of the 14 Stations. Each of the frames with your art, will be placed on both side walls, 7 on one side, 7 on the other. I will provide a Crucifix for the far wall. Step 1. TOSS... January 1942 , born Benedictine hospital into a Catholic family. Many of my actions and sculptures are influenced by Catholicism and I intend to adjust via performance anything which is not spiritually valuable to me now. Question. How does your family religion influence your life and art.Step 2 MIX. Maternal grandfather born on the boat coming from Cork Ireland. Our Paternal grandparents immigrated from Italy never speaking English . The performance lesson. Their difference was intriguing and inspired me to later work with 10 different internal personas as art. 7 in the video LEARNING TO TALK. And now: Bob Dylan, Mother Teresa, Paul McMahon. Question. What did your grandparents mirror for you?Step 3 DECORATE. My Maternal grandmother is an outsider artist. I stood silent next to her daily as she created unusual art magic and she would take her teeth out to sing for me. If I had the wings of an Angel. The teaching. There is always someone who opens the door to the creative for us.Step 4. FOLD IN GENTLY. Mom and Dad are creative, they had a family band . Dad trumpet, Mom sang 30’s standards. Lesson. Linda performs what she learned back then.Step 5. PREHEAT. Spiritual training. 13 years Catholic school, 2 years silent in convent, 2 years silent in a zen center . As a child I wanted to be a Catholic priest and a saint. But I learned later that my spiritual proclivities are all in the BRAIN. That is: My brain is medically wired to love religion because my ventromedial frontal cortex gets positively activated by religion. It’s medical. Science reveals our talents. Performance for me is medicine, is church, is ritual, is healing , is vision quest, is boundary breaking, is trauma clearing, is self directed unconditioning, is my language of choice. Question. How does your wiring work. Your dna?Step 5. SEASON with time. ENDURE for a length of time AS ART and Do something, do anything long enough for the worry brain, the guilty brain, the shame brain, the trauma brain, the fear brain to exhaust itself and then good emptiness visits.STEP 6: MARINATE Dad wanted to be a dentist but had no financial support. Montano’s Shoe store became a place where I witnessed Dad the healer everyday when we visited and saw him on his knees checking shoes to see if they fit. The store became my school, a place that taught devotion to helping and healing: READ THE LIST. My art mimics and imitates the people in my life. In the Immediate family there are 4 nurses, 2 dentists, a surgeon, a hospital dietician, a dietician to be in grad school, a pediatrician and an internal medicine physician!! I do medicine differently. I do art. QUESTION, what did you see early in your life that influenced your current vocation.STEP 7: GARNISH Mom, brave and inspiring, dressing up at Halloween into her seventies, painted hundreds of paintings, sang and played the piano....became the president of the Nurses committee without being a nurse. Mom a brave and fun loving persona guide.BON APPETITE!! The recipe is complete. I have gratitude for all my past performance art influences, and I practice the healing for now which for me is to perform and make videos about the ART OF AGING, to do that I practice asking for help as art and l also lay down occasionally in coffins, as art, and prepare for my LAST PERFORMANCE, the one we all perform.In conclusion, I’ve heard friends say before a meal, ENJOY!!!
