NO MORE MY, ME MINE: NOW US ,THEM, OURS: A PERSONAL INTERVENTION
The focus of this wonderfull convention is intervention, a word whose intention is bandied about by Dr Phil, Judge Judy, Montel,Oprah and a host of other Tv personal friends of mine .Their teachings are that we can come between too polar opposites and create creative change which eventuates in HARMONY.
Thats what we artists do also:
with our concepts
with the tools of our respective trades
with our viewers witnessing our videos, performances and writings.
We are harmony makers.
My art interventions began "in utero" because my mother's pregnancy didnt show and Mom reported, "Everyone was so shocked when you were born, Linda."
I continued the game of shock as an artist and that became my intervention of choice.
Someone died in my family : I intervened and made harmony by creating art/video performances about death.Often the art was shocking.
Or I needed a job:I intervened with that need by making $ art, job art, shocking even myself when I took a "job " as a Salvation Army bell ringer one Christmas season in S.F., telling all friends to come and see me making ,JOB ART.
If I wanted to know more about my soul: I would intervene by living blindfolded for a week in a NYCity store window, using the portable toilet in view of all, cooking and eating as if "blind."SHOCKING!
Remember, that was the 60's , 70's and 80's.
With advancements technological: ipods, internet, face book, my space, u tube ,cell phones and TV reality shows that expose every imaginable human foible, political intricay, personal weaknesses and occasional applaudable intimacy, the need for artists to mentor a harmonious walk with the sacred by exporing their own autobiographical story has changed.
Because now everyone with a cell phone is a video artist; audience members at Tyra Banks shows become practicing performance artists; and our teenage neices and nephews are utube documentary media masters memorializing their racing car skills.
21st century technology has opened our eyes to BIG NEEDS,beyond the personal. Katie Couric makes sure we are reminded nightly of current disasters which trump at least my own daily and past traumas or chronic anorexia.
BIG NEEDS need BIG GIVERS. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are my mentors of choice, cheering us all on to respond outside the autobiographical box of ME, MINE ,MY, by showing us the NEW WAY TO GIVE. Is it the new TAO of BRANJELINA whose rallying cry is:
ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT
LIVE OUTSIDE THE BOX, THE BOX, THE BOX.
OK Angie and Brad, I respond by letting go of my small thinking and will try not to make a video aboout my upcoming glaucoma or colonoscopy tests.
No more ME, MY, MINE!! Now I promise to think about EVERYTHING IN A BIG, BIG BIG WAY.
In fact Im so excited about this , Brangelina that Id like to send you an email which announces my new club, LAC4LAC.Maybe you both and your kids would like to join??
I know, I will make a video and read you the story about my club. Gather your multi-cultural international family around you and let me tell you all about how I graduated from ME TO OUR.
Once upon a time there was an artist named djhkjdhffhkshfkshfkh. One day she woke up and said, no more ME, ME, ME., So she said, now what??Sitting under a big beautifull tree, she slept again but this time she dreampt. The dream told her:"Start a US, THEM, OURS CLUB and name it LAC4LAC.
