Dear AIR,
About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia, a neurologic condition that spasms my body and neck. One day when I was twitching and almost floor bound, I said, "Oye I feel just like Mother Teresa!!!!!!!!!!!!" because I was so crunched over. After saying and feeling this resemblance, I thought,"Why not be her performatively?" having performed as Bob Dylan, Linda Lee, Doctor Jane Gooding(see LEARNING TO TALK, Video Data Bank & LINDA MARY MONTANO AS PAUL MCMAHON, you tube).
The second chapter of this story includes mention of my second mother, Dr Aruna Mehta, an ayruvedic physician, who became my teacher and best friend for 19 years. She gave me the white sari which I collaged into a Missionaries of Charity sari with blue edging, she took me to India, she taught me how to be a meditator in action, she was my link to light and so this re=enactment which I performed for her a few months before she died, is a memorial tribute to our friendship and a way to be in contact with her beauty.
The third chapter references my return to Catholicism. The question is, How does a performance artist become a returned Roman Catholic? This performance is one way that I am answering that question. What is your art/life question?
I thank Martha Wilson for inviting me to participate in this experience.
Sincerely,
Linda Mary montano, 2010.
PS: My dystonia is maintained by botox injections in my neck every 3 months.
